Over the past month or so myself and several others have been going after terminal illnesses with great passion. It’s something the Lord’s put on our hearts and we see it as a clear command in the Word. And over this time we’ve won some battles and lost some. Several people have passed away and that’s been really tough on our hearts, yet it hasn’t quite had the result the enemy would’ve wanted. Instead of being discouraged, we’ve (or at least I have) found a new resolve…

We’ll come back to that in a second, but let me ask you something:

Why am I asking this question? Because I’ve realized that all too often we think in the parameters of time, not eternity. What matters is how many souls enter the Kingdom, how many people experience the Love of God and that we use our short time here for something meaningful. Worldly roadblocks and challenges mean nothing in the light of eternity, except were we faithful?

When I read over the lives of men like Smith Wigglesworth, John G. Lake, John Wesley, and Lester Sumrall my heart is stirred. They displayed that righteousness, miracles, and the “greater works” aren’t just for the Apostles of the Bible, they’re for the modern Christian.

What did they all have in common? They knew they were nothing without Jesus, they believed God is who He says He is, they communed with the Holy Spirit, and they had ever-increasing faith. I think it’s time we take the Word of God, the testimonies of those before us, and the unction of the Holy Spirit deep into our hearts and actually shake the world with the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Let’s be a people that both those who remain alive on this earth past us and our Savior Jesus will say, “Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little…Enter into the joy of your master.”

My Eulogy

Now that I’ve posed the question to you, it is only fair that I answer the question for you. I want my eulogy or story to read something to the affect of…

Ryan Michael Rhodes was a man after God’s own heart that carried a profound passion, drive and resolve towards the things of the Kingdom of God. He stands out amongst the many ‘Father’s of the Faith’ in that he wouldn’t accept the mundane or ordinary but instead chose to endeavor into the unknown depths of glory and intimacy with His Creator, so much so that nothing could deter Him or His faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Truly, he will be an example for generations of believers to look to for a glimpse of what it looks like to achieve the things that Jesus paid for on the Cross. He has run his race and has finished well. For in this man the world has been given an example of what it looks like to be a son of God following in the footsteps of Jesus, led by the Holy Spirit.

My Resolve

With God’s grace, I am going to strive to live a life of eternal consequence, never forgetting the importance of the ever advancing Kingdom. I am going to stand against the Kingdom of Darkness even when no one else will stand with me. I am going to see death bow because Jesus defeated death on the Cross. I will go deeper in God’s presence than I can even perceive at this time. I will keep the faith. I will run my race. I will live a life worthy of the above eulogy.

I now rejoice in my sufferings for you, and fill up in my flesh what is lacking in the afflictions of Christ, for the sake of His body, which is the church, of which I became a minister according to the stewardship from God which was given to me for you, to fulfill the word of God, the mystery which has been hidden from ages and from generations, but now has been revealed to His saints. To them God willed to make known what are the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles: which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. To this end I also labor, striving according to His working which works in me mightily.

Colossians 1:24-29 NKJV

In Closing

I exhort you to prayerfully figure out what you are to be remembered for. What is the eternal perspective of you life? What does it look like for your life to reflect being a son/daughter of the Creator of the universe? Leave a legacy worthy of the salvation you’ve been given.

I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. There isone body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

Ephesians 4:1-6

Please keep me and my crew at FIRE in your prayers. Be blessed!

To God Be All The Glory!

Just for a change of pace, I’m going to write this in a question-answer interview format. Hope it blesses you!

Where did you disappear to and why?

Many people have asked me why I seemingly abandoned my Facebook, Twitter or this blog. The reason is simple: Heart healing. Last spring quarter at Ohio State we got to be a part of some big things God was doing.

  • Our worship nights every friday were drawing in people of the street, including drunks and random families. Jesus was healing many people physically, spiritually and emotionally. The web stream was viewed by nearly 1,000 people overall and people were getting healed behind their computer screens.
  • I was invited to speak at the National Day of Prayer. It was such a great opportunity to share with leaders from every denomination all the things God was doing on campus (salvations, healing, etc.) and give a word on what I felt the Lord was speaking to the Church for this season. This one event opened the doors to unity and we now have friendships and support from across the Bride, from Catholics to Pentecostals.
  • Our campus group FIRE was starting to make a mark on campus and people were starting to hear about us. We were on track to start a full-fledged campus ministry that I’m sure would’ve have been successful.
All great things, but what does any of that matter if my heart isn’t right? I felt like the biggest hypocrite because I was telling people of Jesus’ Love, yet I didn’t understand it myself. Never in my life have I been under such demonic attack. There were times I’d actually see demons following me. Most of my time was spent in isolation. Throughout sleepless nights I slumped into depression and even staying in the Word wasn’t helping me. Sounds heretical, right?

The problem was I was seeking more knowledge of God without letting Him deal with the brokenness already in my heart. I also wasn’t cultivating deeper relationships with my Church*, when heart healing comes from being in the presence of God and in family type community.

Why do we need heart healing?

Heart healing is more than just surrendering yourself to Christ. Often we think that when we give our life to Jesus everything is automatically dealt with and it’s time to start in ministry. The problem with this idea is that the evidence points the opposite way. We are seeing an orphaned Church of broken people that are seeking the blessings of God without knowing His Love. “Famous” Christian leaders, men and women of God, are falling into homosexuality, molesting children, stealing money from their churches or getting caught committing adultery. Why? Our value has been on callings** and not character. We see the Gifts of the Spirit (1 Corinthians 12) as a more important than the Fruits of the Spirit (Galatians 5:16-25) when Love is one of the fruits and Love is everything (1 Corinthians 13, 1 John 4:7-21)!

Something a very wise man told me a few months back that blew my mind: “God doesn’t care about your calling and Jesus didn’t die for your ministry. He doesn’t need you to accomplish anything because He can speak it and it will happen. He cares for you HEART. Jesus died for your HEART. That’s all that matters.”
The Bible says in Proverbs 4:23, “Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.” Ministry must flow out of a whole heart. Whole hearts can help make hearts whole. Hurt people hurt people.

What’s the greatest lesson you learned this summer?

This summer I learned the importance of a whole heart. Do you want to be successful in life, family, marriage, ministry, etc.? Let the Holy Spirit heal your heart. Ask Him to show you any place of brokenness within your heart and invite Him to bring the healing. If you are dealing with repeated sin, ask Him what in your hearts causing the sin. Sin is merely a symptom to the deeper heart issue. Sin is not the problem, it’s a sign of the problem. There’s nothing like the freedom you’ll feel when your hearts been made whole!

What’s the plan now?

The plan now is simply to Love. Our simple church here in Columbus, OH is focusing on Loving God, Loving our families, Loving one another, and Loving everyone we come in contact with. It’s been incredible to watch God slowly bring healing to each of our families as we Love and pray for them. Also, we are passionate about seeing healing, both heart and physical. God has told us that we are to act as a rehabilitation center for hurting people, believer or unbeliever. There has been a beautiful denominational alignment happening and we’ve been able to see everything from Catholic to Pentecostal come together under the peace of the Holy Spirit and the centrality of Jesus Christ.

Please keep us in your prayers.

*The group of people you follow Jesus with throughout the week as a lifestyle, not just a weekly meeting.
**Graces or anointings depending on denomination

The Question…

Ever wonder why people being raised from the dead is only something we read about in the Bible or hear about in a testimony from Heidi Baker’s ministry in Mozambique, Africa? Yeah, me too! And we’re not alone. God is waking this generation up to the fact that when Jesus said “Whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father (John 14:12),” He meant it. Our calling is to “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse lepers, cast out demons (Matt. 10:80).”

Some of my friends and I at Ohio State have really been pressing into what it means to fulfill our calling and walk in the “greater works” that Jesus was talking about so we could see the greatest miracle of all, one soul coming into a Loving relationship with Jesus Christ. So we did what any normal college students would do on summer break, we started listening to the police scanner app on our phones and chasing ambulances to try to pray for people to be healed. Unfortunately, it didn’t go very well.

Just Your Normal Saturday…

On this particular Saturday a couple weeks ago my friend Sheria and I were headed to our friend (and my little Jesus sister) Saria’s graduation party. We stopped by the grocery store to get cards and when we came back to my car we realized I had locked my keys in my car. Sheria and I turned to one another and I said “Every time this has happened Jesus has been delaying me for some reason.” You might have read my blog from October about finding the OSU Prayer House that way (Click Here).

Sheria had recently renewed her AAA membership and had received a card saying it was good through July 2011, so we thought we’d call and be on our way in 15 minutes. When she called they quickly informed her that though they had sent her a card, it hadn’t gone through the computer properly and her membership had not been renewed.

Disappointed, we walked back to the house and we got in the car she had actually bought day, a 1987 Ford hatchback. First thing Sheria said when we got in the car was “I feel like Jesus is about to take us on an adventure.” I was feeling the same thing so we started praying, first that the car would start and second that the Holy Spirit would guide us where He wanted us.

Delay or Divine Appointment?

We were on our way down I-670 towards the airport because the party was at a hotel on Cassidy Rd. While we were talking we missed the Cassidy Rd exit… Then we missed the Steltzer Rd exit… Finally we got off on the third exit to back track to Cassidy. That’s when we pulled up on this at the intersection at Steltzer Rd…

Immediately we knew that this was why God had already delayed us an hour. The accident had just happened and if we had taken the Steltzer Rd exit we probably would have been involved. Two airport police were there at first and they started clearing the intersection completely and we were the last in line to get cleared. We were torn because we wanted to get out and pray for the people involved but the police were telling us to go. That’s when the rest of the emergency vehicles showed up and we were stuck. They then cleared a spot for us to go… but the car died.

It was very clear we were supposed to be here so we pushed our car off the road and began to scan the accident. Right away I spot my friend B*, a Christian rapper in Columbus and someone I went to school with. We had reconnected only two weeks prior, upon God’s leading to go to 13th Ave on campus one night to find a familiar face (a whole other story in itself). I texted him saying “Hey bro we’re here at the accident and we’re praying.” He seemed to be okay and was standing outside his van talking on the phone.

This Is It…

The other car was destroyed, pieces all over the intersection. There was a lady in the passengers seat and she moved around a little bit and then her head slumped down. My heart began to race a million miles per hour!  As we started to pray the medics got to her and started taking her vitals as the fire fighters started to cut into the car. Our hearts sank…

Now let me pause to say, we had been praying for opportunities to see the dead raised, but praying a naive prayer out of excitement and being prepared when the answer comes are two entirely different things! Sheria and I turned to each other and I said “This is it. This is what we’ve been praying for.” Standing about 20 feet from the wreckage we began to tell the body to live. Then the Holy Spirit told us to start telling the body to live. I even texted people to pray and put up a picture on Facebook explaining the situation. We knew the power of our God.

After what seemed like 15 minutes we saw the lady move under the sheet! The medics immediately uncovered her and rechecked her vitals, then put her in a neck brace. At that point she started talking and was able to tell them what happened. She ran the red light going 65mph and ran into B, who was going about 40-45mph, almost head on. They were then able to cut her out of the car with the jaws of life and get her into the ambulance.

The Wreckage…

More of God’s Love…

It was now clear for us to go see B and a few friends of his got there at the same time to pray for him. He was a little battered, bruised and cut up. His arm looked broken because it was swollen up and really red. We circled him and prayed for healing. After that the Holy Spirit led us to pray for the lady in the ambulance again. They cleared the scene and that was it. B went to the hospital and they were surprised that after over 100 mph of impact he only needed a chiropractic adjustment. Praise God!

Sheria’s uncle picked us up and we got a new battery for her car. We finally made it to the party 3 1/2 hours late, yet we were one intersection away (about 30 seconds).

Here’s The Best Part…

So B got the accident report a week or so later and it is official, she was dead 1 minute and 20 seconds. The crazy part is that the time in the report is a second time she died, in the ambulance, at the same time God had told us to pray for her again. They had actually zipped her up in a body bag and she began to move! That’s my Jesus!

Later That Week…

Thursday of the week following the accident Teresa, Ricardo and I were at the OSU Prayer House watching Furious Love (an amazing documentary about God’s power moving in the darkest places on earth) when the Lord prompted us to go out on High St. Unfortunately Ricardo had to go home, so it was just Teresa and I walking down the street at 1:30am. We prayed for God to highlight someone to us and then we saw a man walking bare foot but holding his shoes about 100 yards ahead of us. That seemed like a pretty good sign we should ask him what was going on.

Once we got up to him we asked him why he was barefoot and he began to explain that he was homeless and had broken his leg 10 months before. He hadn’t had proper medical treatment so it never healed properly and he was in much pain. We asked him if we could pray for him since Jesus Loves to heal people and he said we could. And Jesus did! The pain left and he asked us to walk with him to put his shoes on. As we did we prayed more and his crooked leg straightened up and the limp started to disappear.

This Somalian man that had only been in the States for a year extended his hands without any prompting from us and in his broken accent said “Thank You Jesus!” It was so beautiful! I asked him if he had a relationship with Jesus and he went on to tell us that his people tell him to pray 5 times a day to God. I asked him if he was a muslim and he said he wasn’t anymore, he is going to pray to Jesus! We prayed for him a little longer for blessing and left him sitting there smiling and experiencing the Love of God.

What Does This Mean To You?

  • Firstly, if you Love Jesus with your full heart you serve one amazing God! And His Spirit, the same Spirit that rose Christ from the dead, LIVES IN YOU! Wow…
  • Second, Revelation 19:10 says “…the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” That means that when one testifies about something God has done, it applies and is possible in your life too. YOU can see the dead raised and the sick healed. In fact, it’s your mandate as a believer (Mark 16:15-18). One of the churches I shared this testimony with during service had a testimony a week later of an 8 year old boy who got killed in a car accident being raised after 20 minutes of being dead! (There were a total of 3 resurrections this past summer in Columbus, OH alone)
  • We must remember, the greatest miracle of all is one soul coming into a Loving relationship with Jesus. That’s our main purpose as disciples, to make disciples. We’re not here to chase miracles, signs and wonders. Cool thing is that miracles, signs and wonders chase us when we live a life fulfilling the Great Commission and calling on our lives.
  • Finally, God’s Love is always on time. That lady had no idea we were sent there to intercede against death twice. Think about that for a moment. She had no idea… How many times has God showed His Love in our lives, yet we didn’t see it because of our perspective, so we thought His Love wasn’t there? Look at the (former) Muslim… He had no idea the Creator of the Universe had set him up that night to be shown Love. That’s incredible! Jesus’ Love always meets us where we are, in our worst situations, and at the right time. Sometimes it’s hard to see, but be comforted in knowing it is there. Just ask him for a new perspective.
*We’ll call him B for Blessed to be alive and to protect him in this testimony. It’s important to make sure we steward testimonies and don’t let them exploit people.

To God Be All The Glory!

Today I’m preparing to head to Grove City, PA and join some Jesus Lovers for a time of rest before I got back to Ohio State. I went to take a shower and my knees starting pulsating and I instantly knew it was a sympathety pain.

If you don’t know, a sympathy pain is where the Holy Spirit will put pressure or even let you feel some pain somewhere on your body to point out what He wants to heal in someone. It’s basically Him putting His finger right where the persons pain is occurring. It must be clear God isn’t inflicting you with the same pain or disease that they suffering from. It’s simply a word of knowledge. Sometimes when you pray for someone you will get a sympathetic pain and know what to call out. Many times that shows people how real God is because there’s no way you would know that they just had back surgery, kidney problems or get recurring migraines.

For to one is given the word of wisdom through the Spirit, to another the word of knowledge through the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healings by the same Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another discerning of spirits, to another different kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.

-1 Corinthians 12:8-11

I didn’t know who the Holy Spirit was trying to point out to me so I posted this status…

I than just began to type out the prayer I would pray if I was right there in the room with her…

At this point a lot was running through my mind. Thoughts entered my head like “What if she doesn’t get healed? Maybe I should of done in a message so only she could see it.” And “What if she doesn’t get healed and someone sees it and it becomes proof in their mind God doesn’t exist.” I then realized that the enemy was working against my faith and I said, “NO. She is healed in Jesus name!” That’s when she replied…

We serve the God that answers with FIRE. In 1 Kings 18 where Elijah went up against the prophets of Baal in front of all the children of Israel saying in verse 21,

How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.”

He went on to challenge the prophets to call on Baal to burn the sacrifice in verse 24.

“You call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.

Without preaching a whole sermon on this (which is going to happen in the near future), Baal doesn’t answer them. Elijah mocks them and then has them pour water on the sacrifice. He prayed to God and needless to say God answered with FIRE (verses 38,39).

“Then the fire of the LORD fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench. Now when all the people saw it, they fell on their faces; and they said, “The LORD, He is God! The LORD, He is God!”

That’s the God we serve. He answers with FIRE and makes Himself known. Be an Elijah. Stand on faith when no one else will. We aren’t called to blind faith. We are called into His Loving arms where He takes care of us. It isn’t a religious chore, it relationship with the Creator of the universe!

“Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame…For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

-Romans 10:11, 13

To God Be All The Glory!

Tonight as we worshipped I received a text message through the prayer line. It was from a man named Todd whom I’ve never met and I’m really not sure how he even found my blog, but it was certainly divine appointment. Here’s our conversation that happened via text message:

Todd: Hi Ryan. I love Yr site. Just found it. I have a very earnest prayer request. 9:09 PM

Todd: My name is todd. I would really be appreciative if u could pray for my total recovery from cigarette addiction and healing from damage from smoking. And 9:11 PM

Todd: ANY prophetic word from the Lord about what He thinks of me. God bless u. I need God s help and presence. 9:11 PM

Me: Well my brother, here’s what God thinks of you: He says you’re chosen (Romans 8:28-31), He says you’re made powerful in Him (John 14:12), and He says your Loved (Romans 8:37-39). I will pray for you and send you anything God gives me for you. Love you my brother. 9:37 PM

Me: God, I pray you just surround Todd with Your presence now Lord. Just coat him in comfort and peace. God, we know you’re the perfect father and You Love to pour out Your Love on Your children. Papa, I just ask that You pour out Your Love on Your son. Let him physically feel Your arms wrap around him. 9:41 PM

Me: Holy Spirit, began to let him feel Your healing power flow throughout his lungs as You remove all scar tissue and damage done by smoking. We know that Jesus died on the cross and defeated sin and death. And in death is sickness and disease so we stand on the authority of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit and say BE HEALED in the name of JESUS! Father, we thank you for grace and we ask that You be his strength. 9:48 PM

Me: Holy Spirit, bring strong conviction to where the very sight or smell of a cigarette makes him sick to his stomach. Let it be part of his testimony as people see how you broke it off his life. At the same time as you remove this that’s physical killing him God begin to weed out the things in his life spiritually killing him. God, even now let more of Your presence and Love rest upon him. 9:52 PM

Me: So we just declare complete and total healing in the name of Jesus. Amen 10:03 PM

Me: How do you feel? 10:08 PM

(At this point I was wondering how affective a prayer via text message could be)

Todd: Brother thank u. I can’t begin to tell u how I felt the presence of God and the Holy Spirit just move thru me as I read Yr words. I believe them and I believe God has healed me! Jesus defeated my addiction! The Holy Spirit flooded me like almost like a wind moving inside me! I believe That I will be able 10:09 PM

Todd: to minister to others and point them to Abba Father who loved me enough to send His Son for me and conquer this world for me 10:09 PM

Todd: And I could feel Him wrap Himself around me 10:10 PM

Todd: I know that I am healed. Thank u so much it is u reflecting Jesus and being so willing to pray for the hurting and lost That drew me to bring a prayer request to you 10:14 PM

(Jesus smacked me after Todd’s healing haha)

Me: A group is praying for you. Heres what we’re getting: 10:15 PM

Todd: I’ve agonized over thus addiction for so many years. Its been a stumbling block in my walk w Jesus for so long. But no more! 10:15 PM

(^That’s the freedom found in Jesus^)

Me: God is your defense. One person kept seeing shields and armor and towers and they all represented His defending you. And for so long you’ve tried to fight and God wants you to know its finished. You will even feel the need to keep fighting out habit but no more. 10:23 PM

Todd: Praise God thank u thank u. So true I have tried so many legalistic ways to ‘earn’ my way into right standing w God and I have battled addiction all my adult life. I will remember with God’s help each hour that He is my defense 10:27 PM

Me: That’s Jesus my brother! 10:30 PM

Me: He Loves you! 10:32 PM

Todd: Thank u thank u most of all Jesus and I will seek Him daily 10:33 PM

Me: I will be praying for you 10:37 PM

Todd: God bless u. I will be praying for you and Yr ministry. Jesus still heals and saves 10:39 PM

Me: Yes He does! 10:40 PM

(God really touched my heart with this part)

Todd: Father I just love you and thank you for What You have done, are doing and will do in all our lives and I lift up Ryan Your servant and ask that You daily 10:48 PM

Todd: strengthen and shield him. That you would strengthen him to continue leading people to You. That he continue to please You by loving those broken and 10:48 PM

Todd: hurting around him the way our king Jesus loves. Again we love you Father and You Alone are worthy the most High. Thank you That You have heard us abba 10:48 PM

Todd: father and thank you for your Son Jesus and for your Holy Spirit. Amen in Jesus name. 10:48 PM

Todd: Thanks Ryan I will be in touch. God bless and strengthen you 10:49 PM

Me: Thank you!

Jesus really healed someone via text message… He never ceases to amaze me! Moral of the story, there’s no limits on the power of the Holy Spirit! Amen.

“But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.” Romans 8:11
